Our bodies are comprised largely of mortal cells. However, the reproductive cells that connect generations can replicate without limit, i.e. possess ‘cellular immortality’. We now have a profound understanding and methods of modifying these mechanisms. An important consequence of this line of research was the isolation of human embryonic stem cells and methods of producing them by cloning. The current state of the art and potential future trends in modifying human lifespan will be discussed.
