Speaker(s): Maureen Clemmons
Dr. Clemmons developed a novel theory that ancient Egyptians built their pyramids by harnessing the wind, an abundant and natural resource. Not only has her work revolutionized theories of ancient construction, but it opened new opportunities in modern road and building construction. This lecture reviews her field expeditions where she erected first a 3.5-ton, then a 16-ton, obelisk using wind, and her experiments where she constructed a 156-ton pyramid in conjunction with 100 architecture students from Cal-Poly, Pomona. The History Channel documentary Flying Pyramids, Soaring Stones profiles her theory and research demonstrating ancient Egyptians could have harnessed the wind to build their monuments.
