Tracks: Degassing Optimization

The vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) process plays a very important role in refining of stainless steel with low carbon contents. The main goals of this process are decarburization, desulfurization and the adjustment of the target nitrogen content. Process optimization strategies account for economic advantages and process-related requirements, whereas different optimization criteria are possible: (1) economic benefit by reducing the amount of reduction material, (2) economic benefit based on a reduced treatment time and (3) the need to adjust the handover or tapping temperature. Based on metallurgical models and different applications, the present paper illustrates the potentials of VOD process optimization.
