Tracks: Mold Behavior Understanding

ArcelorMittal Cleveland No. 2 slab caster applied the HD Mold technology from SMS on the narrow faces of one strand to check on its durability, functionalities and usefulness. With the input from ArcelorMittal R&D, the special precise drilling technique and optical fiber gridding of HD Mold allow the fibers to monitor Cu mold temperature in the entire mold length at 18 positions and direct measurement of local heat fluxes in three vertical lines. This paper gives examples of the fiber temperature monitoring and local mold heat flux monitoring to show the potential of the customized HD Mold design at the No. 2 Caster. These examples include casting start-up monitoring, mold heat flux monitoring, mold level monitoring, mold flow characteristics, meniscus standing wave, taper change monitoring, mold powder performance as well as sticker prediction.
