Rolling the latest wave of new steel grades requires greater grinding accuracy and enhanced roll inspection capacity. On the other hand, competition from alternative materials and the general market situation are making investments difficult for steel producers. Upgrading existing roll grinders can be a viable choice. This presentation provides a technical analysis of different levels of upgrade — based on machine conditions — and an overview of goals that can be achieved, as opposed to the replacement with a new machine. Furthermore, recent upgrade projects are discussed as examples.
