In the long rolling segment of the world steel industry, the demands on productivity and product quality are continually increasing. This is particularly true for operators of combination mills for coiled products, making a wide size range in wire rod and bar-in-coil. These mills need to respond quickly to customer orders for wire rod and coiled bar, then make the best product: metallurgical and surface quality in a uniform, well-formed coil. This paper presents recent developments in pouring reels for the formation of high-quality bar-in-coil products. The latest design of pouring reel is suited for new mill installations as well as mill modernizations. Through a novel, patent-pending arrangement of tub components, coils can be formed with minimum heights and cycle times, optimized with product diameter.
