Work rolls used in steel production are susceptible to work hardening and accumulation of residual surface stresses, leading to the production of cracks. Advancements in NDT instrumentation and techniques, combined with high-speed data analysis, have resulted in lower-cost inspection systems that improve productivity by reducing cycle time of the roll inspection, and increase roll life with high sensitivity and accuracy to remove as little roll surface material as possible. This paper will discuss the inspection techniques available for the mill rolls and explain the new improvements in UT and other inspection technologies used for surface, subsurface, shell thickness, core-shell disbond, and bruise inspection.
