The mechanical stirring method with an impeller has been widely applied to the hot metal desulfurization process in Japan. In order to optimize the composition of desulfurization flux containing lime and aluminum ash (20~30% metallic Al–40~50%Al2O3), the effect of the CaO/Al2O3 ratio and the metallic Al/Al2O3 ratio on the hot metal desulfurization was examined by using 300-kg-scale hot metal experiments. The desulfurization efficiency was improved due to a decrease in the CaO/Al2O3 ratio. It is important to determine the flux composition of the aluminum ash composition because the optimum metallic Al/Al2O3 ratio varies depending on the aluminum ash composition.
