Impact on Reliability: DGA Monitoring of EAF and LMF Transformer

A significant risk for unplanned outages and lost production has been on the increase in the past few years, due to EAF or LMF transformer failures. This paper and presentation will examine the role DGA monitoring will play in reducing unplanned outages. When combined with robust DGA oil analysis and engineering support, monitoring can be either passive or active. Because of the unique nature of EAF and LMF transformers, online DGA monitoring is becoming the standard for condition monitoring for reliability. We will present the results of an 18-month monitor study, with all major on-line monitoring OEMs participating. An on-line monitoring program combined with scheduled chemical analysis is considered the “best practice” for DGA monitoring of EAF and LMF transformers.
