Tracks: Blast Furnace Operating Improvements

Coke consumption has always been a major concern in Tata Steel blast furnaces, since it contributes around 60% to the hot metal costs. Therefore, this paper seeks to detail the steps that were taken to achieve the significant reduction in coke rate in the history of Tata Steel blast furnaces. The improvement was accomplished in two subsequent phases through benchmarking exercises, optimization of furnace operating parameters and enhancement in coal rate to 200 kg/thm. The results achieved were significant: coke rate decreased by 22%, or by 100 kg/thm, resulting in net annualized recurring savings of $106 million.
