Control System and Motor Upgrade at the ArcelorMittal Number 4 Steel Production Facility

During the summer of 2016, ArcelorMittal elected to embark on an ambitious project to replace the outdated level 1 control system associated with the No. 4 Steel Production Strand 2 continuous caster unit located at the Indiana Harbor East facility in East Chicago, Ind., USA. Along with this upgrade, the DC motors associated with the caster were replaced with new AC motors and variable frequency drives. Work on the project was started in early June with the goal of having the new systems up and running by the end of a two-week outage in early September 2016.
