A new rebar product of high strength with improved seismic and corrosion resistance has been developed for the first time in India. These rebars have better UTS/YS ratio (≥1.25) with greater uniform elongation (above 8%), as per IS 1786 Fe 500S. These properties ensure higher energy absorption under loading conditions in the plastic range. This absorbs shock loads during earthquakes and hence prevents catastrophic failure of structures. It is also essential to have corrosion resistance for these structural applications. A newly designed composition and temp-core parameters were developed to have corrosion along with seismic resistance. Rebars of size ø25 mm and ø32 mm were produced in industrial scale as per IS 1786 Fe 500S grade with additional corrosion resistance. Mechanical and microstructural characterization was done. Corrosion studies are under progress and will be incorporated in this paper.
