Tracks: Use of DRI in Steelmaking

On-line models for DRI flow and power profile setup were implemented in the electric arc furnace of Ternium Largos Puebla. Real-time mass and energy balances dividing the furnace into zones and identifying the various stages in the operation thereof, to determine the actual molten charge at all times, are performed. The model calculates and decides the DRI flow value that must be achieved by level 1 DRI flow control to maintain the current molten charge, while the power model is based on tracking a power tap profile as function of power consumption (MWh), continually evaluating arc stability and deciding whether to increase or decrease the current tap. Results show repetitiveness in the operation of different modes of furnace charge and reduced variability of KPIs of the process: specific energy, average power, overall productivity, oxygen activity and final temperature, among others.
