This article aims to evaluate the surface quality of cast billets, such as oscillation marks and roughness, by microstructure analysis and macrostructure. It will be seen that the influence of solidification, the chemical composition and heat transfer are of great importance for the formation of these marks. This issue will be addressed within an Fe-C diagram, with emphasis on peritectic points.
