Tracks: Mold Behavior Understanding

A study of the peritectic range in steel alloys was conducted through statistical analysis of data from mold thermocouples during continuous slab casting. Intervals of constant casting speed were identified, and basic statistics were calculated on the thermocouple readings and casting parameters for those intervals. Each interval was associated with its steel grade, heat chemistry, values for carbon equivalent, and predicted lower and upper boundaries of the peritectic range from published models. The results are used to test the validity of the published models and to indicate how models for predicting peritectic behavior could be improved.
