Tracks: Control

Previous work examined the usage of an advanced technique for controlling a fully operational tandem hot sheet mill with highly successful results. This paper expands on the previous work as a basis to implement a method of fault-tolerant control that allows the continued operation of the mill in the event of certain failure modes. In this initial investigation, the previously developed advanced control method is coupled with a virtual rolling technique to realize this new method. Simulations at the University of Pittsburgh have shown the new method to be highly successful in allowing operation to continue in the face of certain faults that ultimately improves the availability of the mill.
