Tracks: Plant Upgrades & New Equipment Developments

In recent years, heavy-gauge API/pipe production, such as 1-inch-thick X70 or X80, has become increasingly popular on hot strip mills. But the handling of the coil gets more and more challenging. This applies especially to the motion for opening (peeling) and controlling the coil during movements. Furthermore, it is typically required to take samples and keeping the strip plastification at a minimum. Primetals has developed a sampling station using plasma cutting technology in order to reduce the required space between strip to be cut off and the coil, in particular compared to the space requirements of a mechanical shear. The scrap or sample piece is held until the cut of the plasma torch is finished, so the behavior of the scrap or sample piece is more controllable. Also using a non-mechanical cutting method avoids vibrations or shocks which would have to be absorbed by the foundation.
