This paper is based on two decades of experience with continuous monitoring of partial discharge in medium-voltage equipment. Findings will be supported by case studies from field experience in applications including steel mills and other industrial settings. Partial discharge activity can be very unstable and highly dependent on ambient conditions. Periodic partial discharge test results can also result in a false sense of security. To help attendees understand these challenges and available solutions, the importance of continuous partial discharge monitoring will be examined. Attendees will also learn how continuous monitoring can allow their organizations to be more proactive in making corrective repairs and avoid costly downtime.
