A modernization project at the long products rolling mill of Nucor in Norfolk focused on improvements to the handling area for coiled bar products, to improve the cooling process for higher-quality bar needed for expanding markets. Ahead of the pouring reels, a new shear was installed for better front- and tail-end trimming. New equipment placed after the reels enables the smooth handling of coils on vertical stem pallets in a modular system with elevators, turntables, trim station, downender and transfer car, plus a controlled cooling line with air blowing stations for the coils. A mechatronic system provided automation for the new system, as well as an interface to the existing coil handling conveyor and compactor. This paper discusses details of these equipment and control system upgrades and the resulting benefits that have been realized from the project.
