Tracks: Project Planning & Execution

This paper describes the fast-track project of replacing an ore stacker/reclaimer in order to minimize the impact on the material handling operation of a fully integrated steel mill. The machine was fabricated in Germany and China and delivered at the Burns Harbor, Ind., USA, port for modular erection at the jobsite. The majority of the construction was performed during the winter months, requiring the fabrications to arrive before the Great Lakes locks were closed for the winter. The machine was essentially an in-kind replacement with respect to capacity, but incorporating many upgraded features, such as hydraulic luffing and hydraulic motors for the bucket wheel operation. The machine is now operational and being used for the unloading and stacking of iron ore pellets, as well as other materials.
