Standards reflect, although with some delay, techological advances in product manufacturing and the progression of requirements by user. In this paper, national, regional and internationl standards for rebar are reviewed, with a focus on high ductility, seismic applications and hardening mechanism (solid solution, quenching and tempering, microalloying production process). This product is an example of a low level of internationalization, with important variations from country to country regarding criteria for standarization, mechanical properties, chemical analysis, special testing like fatigue and adherence, etc. Some restrictions are emerging from standards and local regulations regarding the influence of the different hardening mechanisms.
