After describing the history of empathic responding in the counseling relationship, this LI will examine recent research that demonstrates its importance in developing a working alliance with clients. It then presents six novel approaches to empathy, including reflecting deeper feelings; pointing out discrepancies; and using visual imagery, analogies, metaphors, and targeted self-disclosure. It concludes with a discussion of how such approaches develop neuropathways and can lead to enduring change.
