Virginia Fire + Rescue Conference 2016

Maximizing Quint Effectiveness (Room 4C)

27 Feb 16
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Some fire departments see quintuple fire apparatus, or the “one truck fights all” concept, as an answer to their diminishing budget, only to see the concept fail. Other departments have learned how to integrate quintuples into their operation and have come to embrace the concept. This class will teach the difference between a triple, quad and quint; and the history of quintuple fire apparatus and how they evolved into the “Total Quint Concept.” The presenter will discuss why some quint experiments failed, and describe the three most important factors a department can implement to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of their quint company. Specific information discussed in this presentation are: the definition of a quint; history of the quint from 1910’s to present day; NFPA standard related to quints; quint apparatus design and capabilities; operational and maintenance costs; weight limitations; the “Total Quint Concept” as adopted and later rejected by the St. Louis and Richmond Fire Departments; the advantages and disadvantages; the similarities between a quint and squad company concept; and the elements required to institute a quint fire company in a efficient and effective manner.
