This interactive and fast-paced presentation explores the reasons why all fire service personnel from recruits to chief officers should become more knowledgeable in aerial ladder operations. This presentation will discuss the physics behind aerial ladders; the different types of aerial ladders and their advantages/disadvantages; aerial ladder structural stability; and best practices on improving positioning, stabilizing and operating aerial ladder apparatus for both aggressive fire attack and rescue situations. Also discussed will be proper operating practices focusing on aggressive positioning; operations and fire attack; improving the scrub area, fire attack strategies, examples of improper aerial placement; and case studies related to aerial ladder failures. Special emphasis will be on the 12 reasons for aerial ladder failure reinforced with real world examples.
