In 2012 the Affordable Care Act required the establishment of a transparency program now known as The Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Under this legislation, manufacturers of drugs, medical devices and biologicals must report certain payments and items of value given to physicians and teaching hospitals to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).  CMS is responsible for implementing the Sunshine Act and has called it the Open Payments Program.  WOC nurses must have an understanding of the key provisions in The Sunshine Act in order to support each other and our physician colleagues in the implementation of this federal program.
