Nurses often perceive indwelling urinary catheters as benign medical devices when in fact their use has inherent risks.  Frequently there is a lack of understanding regarding the difference in the definition and treatment of acute and chronic urinary retention.  This presentation will review the differences in definition, cause and treatment of acute and chronic urinary retention, discuss the risks of indwelling catheters and review the work done around the globe related to when and how to remove urinary catheters in different health care environments.
