(O401) Psychosocial Issues Of Living With A Stoma (Room 517 d)

07 Jun 16
9:50 AM - 10:50 AM

Tracks: Ostomy

Each ostomate's psychological journey is unique, just as each stoma is different. There are some common themes that arise with ostomates, and these are good for WOCN to be aware of and bring up with new ostomates. The topics we will discuss during this session is emotional adjustment to the ostomy, sexuality and body image, as well as social life considerations. Often times the medical profession focuses only on the physical aspect of caring for the stoma, but since depression and anxiety happen very frequently, it is vital for nurses to assess for emotional issues and refer the patient for additional support. There will be time for questions, as well as discussion of the Ostomy Adjustment Inventory that is a useful tool for clinical practice.
