Awareness of the factors that affect the skin of the obese person and the effect these changes have on routine skin care and wound healing is but one of the tasks that we must undertake to guarantee positive outcomes when we are asked to participate in the care of the bariatric patient. Our own safety and that of the patient become a concern when we consider the lifting, turning and repositioning that often accompany skin care and pressure ulcer prevention protocols. This presentation will address the changes that differentiate skin of the obese person from that of the non-obese person, the effects on the healing process and changes in skin and wound care to accommodate these changes. Selection of proper support surface will be discussed as well as use of ancillary equipment to facilitate care and lessen risk of staff injury. This lecture will also discuss the need for each of us as healthcare providers to be aware of our feelings about obesity and to extend sensitive care when working with and discussing our bariatric patients.
