(C302) Thelma Wells Lecture: Reconfiguring Your Route: Long-Term Implications of Urinary Diversions (Room 516)

Tracks: Continence

Radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer.  Reconstructive surgery for the patient undergoing a cystectomy includes the construction of an ileal conduit, neobladder or continent urostomy.  This presentation will review each surgical procedure and report on long term outcomes including measures of quality of life, recurrence of disease, renal function and complications such as obstructions, stoma issues and hernia formation. The problem in practice for the WOC nurse is the lack of long term follow up on this patient population and this session will help the clinician understand the long term implications of the three urinary diversions to better support the patient in decision making.
