Management of the high output stoma is extremely challenging for the clinician, as it is associated with malabsorption, malnutrition, dehydration, reduced quality of life, significant morbidity and mortality, and high health care costs. The etiology can be multifactorial. However, ensuring adequate nutrition and hydration is an integral component of care. Management of these patients is complex and requires an understanding of the physiological alterations that occur in order to understand the treatments employed. Those treatments can include dietary, fluid and pharmacological agents. This presentation will address these physiological alterations along with the roles of nutrition and fluid interventions, and the conventional medications as well as trophic factors enlisted.
