Humans in the Machine: Enhancing Safety as Operations Become More Complex (Room 121)

26 Sep 17

Tracks: Research to Practice

As mechanical processes and operations become more complex, safety systems must evolve and expand. The people in these environments are uniquely suited to enhance safety in ways that other layers of protection can’t. In this session, we’ll use human factors principles to explore two central issues: How dynamic human intervention enhances the integrity of complex systems, and what keeps people from intervening when they should. Identifying the cognitive and environmental forces that inhibit intervention provides direction for practitioners looking to enhance the safety of their systems in response to growing complexity.
