Shampoos and Conditioners are used by all of us in our personal routines. We use them with little thought as we start our day. The same design that goes into human personal care should be used to construct a proper groomer shampoo and conditioner used in your work place. There is a reason why that ingredient list is as long as it is on the back panel of the product you use. We will explore the components of a shampoo and conditioner so you can better understand the need for each of those ingredients. Raw material selection is very important when the cosmetic chemist develops a formulation. Testing of components prior to incorporating into a final formula insures a safe product for use by you the groomer. Even though there may be a rush to get a product to market, allowing for ample time from concept to final commercial product is a must. Proper stability across all temperatures and environmental conditions that the product will be exposed to is necessary. This maintains product consistency for the groomer. The need for reformulation of products is growing with regulatory impacts (ex. California’s Prop 65), supply disruption of raw materials and increasing costs of raw materials by environmental issues. The groomer needs to understand why sometimes the products color, feel or consistency may change by other factors beyond the manufacturer’s control. Marketing topics that are often used without explanation will be explored. These include the need for preservative systems to maintain the safety of the product on the shelf and after continual use. Natural vs. synthetic preservative systems will be compared. “Soap free” is a term often used but poorly understood by many marketing groups. Also, sulfate-free systems will be explained. It is hoped that you will leave this training session more enlightened about the complexity of groomer formulations. This will allow you to better explain the science of the products you use to your clients.
