After this session participants will be able to: 1) define the laboratorian’s role in identification and reduction of health disparities; 2) explain the appropriateness of using race/ethnicity as surrogates in diagnostic testing algorithms; 3) evaluate how race/ethnicity is or can be used as crude surrogates to identify functional biomarkers that stratify patients based on their genetic/biochemical profile rather than their self-identified race; and 4) develop and validate patient-specific diagnostic testing algorithms using data generated in both the clinical laboratory and translational research studies.
