An Algorithmic Approach to Laboratory Hematology-192013 (Room Georgia World Congress Center - B304)

After this session, participants will be able to: 1) integrate blood smear morphologic findings with clinical history and laboratory data to determine the underlying cause or differential diagnosis for a patient’s anemia; 2) recommend appropriate additional laboratory testing and pathology evaluation for the workup of patients with anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, leukocytosis, polycythemia, and thrombocytosis; 3) distinguish reactive versus neoplastic elevations of the white blood cells count, red cell count, and platelet count; and 4) list causes of cytopenias and identify blood smear findings that can be useful in distinguishing the underlying etiologies.
