The fluid flow of liquid steel within a slab mold influenced by both control flow systems (slidegate and stopper rod) was studied using mathematical simulation, particle image velocimetry, and ultrasound velocimetry in a water model. The results indicate that both systems have profound effects on the fluid flow patterns in slab molds. The fluid flow within the slab mold and melt-flux interface is steadier with the stopper rod than with the slidegate system. To understand the effects of control flow systems, a theoretical analysis was employed, characterized by turbulent flows in continuous casting molds.
