Synthetic hydraulic fluids have been a mainstay for use in critical applications such as high- and low-temperature operating systems, and in situations that require fire resistance or biodegradability. Since the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act of 1972, standards have become increasingly stringent for fluid products used in equipment that operates on and around U.S. waterways. Standards that became effective in 2013 have been the driving force in the development of new fluid technologies. Today’s products are engineered not only to meet or exceed these new regulations, but also to provide qualities that optimize equipment performance. This paper will discuss water soluble polyalkylene glycol and other fluids that have been engineered to meet these new standards while still providing the characteristics we expect from synthetic hydraulic fluids.
