High-viscosity fluids (Morgoil®) are utilized for lubrication of backup roller (BUR) bearings used in flat sheet rolling operations. Ingression of large quantities of water in Morgoil is prevalent, particularly in hot mills, due to seal leakage. Free water in the lubrication system is harmful due to loss of lubricity of the oil, accelerated bearing fatigue wear and metal corrosion. This leads to increased operating costs associated with fluid replacement and disposal, component repair and/or replacement and increased levels of maintenance. Conventional methods for water removal include the use of centrifuges, which requires high levels of maintenance. Adoption of a robust filtration system for particulate/gel removal, in combination with vacuum dehydrator technology for water removal, has proved effective in extending the operational life of the BUR lube system.
