Tracks: Plant Automation Upgrades, Sensors & Controls

This paper reports on a revamp project of a SMS Siemag CSP® Plant in Dolvi, Maharashtra, India, that was originally commissioned in 1998. The new automation system ensures precise, effective production handling while keeping the existing high product quality. The new SMS X-Pact® control system replaces the existing obsolete automation hardware. Besides the upgrade of the automation system, the main drive controls of finishing mill and downcoilers were replaced. The heart of the new drive control system is a Power Electronic Controller based on Ethercat (PECe). The open-heart operation of level 2 control systems as well as the replacement of the complete level 1 systems, inclusive of the technological control systems (TCS) and basic automation, will be realized in a 23-day shutdown.
