This paper presents the initial stage for a phased approach implemented on the upgrade of a hot mill level 2 system at Nucor Steel–Arkansas (Hickman), starting with the front-end interface and communications core between all participating systems (AS400, Alpha, database servers and various control systems). This implementation was developed completely off-line and by parallel testing with the existing L2 system. The initial phase was implemented seamlessly in the hot mill with minimum impact on any aspect of the production process.
