New technologies are needed in metallurgy to improve process control, make operation safe and effectively cut costs. This paper introduces an effective solution for real-time analysis of chemical composition of materials, using the cutting-edge laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Automatic on-line process analysis, compared to laboratory analysis, enables producers to not only detect changes in incoming materials, but to take immediate appropriate actions. LIBS on-line analyzers have already shown their efficiency under real operations: for sinter plants they provide constant quality control of sinter mix, crushed ore and concentrate; stable chemistry of sinter due to automatic dosage of components; reduced coke consumption; efficient blast furnace operation.
