Medium Mn TRIP-aided steels are strong candidates in the third-generation advanced high-strength steels to meet the lightweighting demands of the automotive industry without comprising passenger safety. A previous study with a prototype 3G-AHSS TRIP-aided steel has shown that published DOE targets of UTS = 1500 MPa and elongation = 20% can be attained through a two-stage heat treatment compatible with the continuous galvanizing process. In this study, selective oxidation of the main alloying elements was analysed using SEM, XPS and auger microscopy. Reactive wetting tests were also carried out, followed by a detailed analysis of the coating morphology, microstructure and quality. This paper will discuss the selective oxidation and reactive wetting of a prototype 3G-AHSS and access its potential in the continuous galvanizing line.
