Quench lamellarization tempering (QLT) heat treatment for a 10 wt. % Ni low-carbon martensitic steel leads to the formation of austenite, which is thermally stable at cryogenic temperatures. Deformation-induced transformation of this austenite to martensite contributes to its superior sub-ambient impact toughness and ballistic resistance than the existing steels used in naval applications and in cryogenic and energy systems. 3D atom probe tomography is utilized to follow the evolution of the local chemical composition of austenite precipitated at various stages during the QLT heat treatment to understand the dependence of composition on the thermodynamic stability of austenite to further optimize the QLT heat treatment.
