Factors causing cracks of H-sectional steel at the No. 3 CC machine of JFE Steel (Kurashiki) were evaluated by thermal analysis, and the results of optimization of mold cooling are reported. The causes for cracks are estimated to be uneven cooling in the mold, as a result of shell thickness measurement. To minimize the difference in surface temperature of the mold, the structure of the mold was changed — specifically, the seam of copper plate was replaced and the radius of canal was decreased. Moreover, mold taper was increased to 250%, since the previous mold had insufficient mold taper. The frequency of cracks detected decreased to 0% after the combination of structural changes in the mold.
