Although it is well known that acicular ferrite increases steel toughness, its formation mechanism is still not fully understood. The present work describes a four-step methodology for the systematic study of acicular ferrite formation, including thermodynamic calculations, melting experiments in a Tammann furnace, in-situ observations of the austenite-ferrite-transition by laser scanning confocal microscopy and computer-based metallographical analyses. Applying this methodology, the formation potential for acicular ferrite in HSLA, pipeline and rail steels is investigated and compared. Special attention is paid to the influence of acicular ferrite on the mechanical properties of the investigated steel grades.
