We have developed a unique continuous casting mold powder which has an ultra-high viscosity slag (over 1.0 Pa･s at 1300 degree Celsius) for improving small size mold (bloom, billet, round, and beam blank) casting processes. The new developed higher viscosity type powder has been successfully used and is currently providing many casting benefits including improved surface quality, reduction of inclusion defects, expanded SEN life, and prevention of sticking at many casting facilities. This paper will present the features and performance of the new developed powder based on actual casting results.
