Airspace Awareness And Flight Safety Through A Distributed Network Of Apps, Smart Devices, and UTM Interfaces (Room 261-262)

02 May 16
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Tracks: Air, Airspace Integration

In this presentation Dr. McNeal will describe the unmanned aircraft ecosystem and use cases as they exist today. He will focus on both the recreational market and the commercial market, analyzing the present use cases, near term use cases, and future use cases. Through the presentation the audience will learn about the capabilities and limitations of present day systems and how law and policy must evolve to meet present and future capabilities. After setting the stage, Dr. McNeal will then turn his attention to how technology can empower innovation, focusing in particular on NASAs proposed UTM system, and interim solutions such as flight planning, flight notification, airspace information, geofencing, and other technical solutions to existing policy challenges. He will then discuss how a distributed network of smart UAS, internet enabled devices, and software solutions utilizing APIs and SDKs can empower innovation.
