Tracks: Defense, Ground, Research and Development, Technical Track: Ground Robot Research

Improvised explosive devices are one of the greatest threats to today’s ground forces. Unmanned tactical wheeled vehicles can deliver force protection by removing personnel from logistics convoys, providing a safe standoff from the threat of IEDs and other forms of attack. Simultaneously, facing human resource challenges, armed forces are seeking increased efficiencies through automation. Empowering a single operator to supervise the operation of multiple unmanned trucks may serve as a force-multiplier, freeing up warfighters to stay in the fight. This presentation will cover considerations for hardware and software approaches that enable intelligent autonomy to contend with complex and austere environments, translating to mission effectiveness by reducing operator workload, by allowing UGVs to perform the task of driving. Topics include vehicle actuation, advanced perception and machine learning, one-to-many control and the integration of unmanned systems into manned convoys.
