NICTA has been funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to create a national renewable energy knowledge sharing platform. The Project now underway in partnership with the Australian Clean Energy Council, is developing a consolidated national renewable energy spatial data platform to publish, link and visualise renewable energy knowledge for the Australian renewable energy industry, governments, academia and the wider community. Federal and State Government agencies, academia and industry have collectively funded a range of projects that have resulted in mapping data products that can assist industry in its analysis of future renewable energy infrastructure needs, improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of connecting renewable energy projects to the grid. Mapping projects undertaken have covered the full spectrum of renewable technologies including: wind; solar photovoltaic (PV); solar thermal; geothermal; tidal; wave; biofuels; agricultural waste; landfill gas; and other renewable sources. Complementary studies have also included detailed network constraint modelling and real-time predictive analytics platforms. This project centres on the development and hosting of a new mapping capability for Australia that will provide long term access and interoperability for these mapping products for the renewable energy industry and wider community. It involves the development of a spatial data infrastructure platform that will integrate available location–enabled renewable energy data and modelling providing a unique national platform for renewable energy resource assessment. A key focus of the platform is the ongoing availability of renewable energy and electricity grid spatial data and an ability to perform and continuously develop analytics on these datasets. It builds on NICTA developed nationalmap.nicta.com.au and initial datasets can be viewed at aremi.nicta.com.au The technology is being open sourced to encourage uptake outside of Australia.
