As a result of the large-scale introduction of renewable electricity sources the energy sector is faced with fundamental changes. Due to the intermittency of the output of wind turbines and solar panels the traditional steady base load for power plants is disappearing; instead, frequent starts and stops are required. Moreover, a full back-up power to the renewable sources is necessary because of the uncertainty of their output. Piston engines in single cycle and combined cycle applications can offer this flexibility at minimum costs.
This CIMAC Circle provides a discussion with major engine manufacturers on the challenges for the industry and the advantages of the engine-driven solutions. The panel is chaired by Patrick Frigge from GE Power & Water.
