An Advanced Monitoring and Diagnostic System for Coal Mill Optimization in Thermoelectric Power Plants (Room G104, Auditorium Centre, First Floor)

Enel Ingegneria e Ricerca SpA is strongly committed toward the development and validation of innovative solutions able to improve the technical and environmental performances of coal fired power plants. The milling system is a critical machinery of coal fired power plants, affecting performances like pollutant emissions, specific consumption, operation flexibility and plant economics. In this framework, Enel Ingegneria e Ricerca started a collaboration with Loccioni Group for the development and validation of an advanced monitoring and predictive diagnostic system. Effective tools for the combustion system tuning, like the on-line monitoring of both the pulverized coal fineness and the coal flow unbalances among the burners, have been developed and validated with the aim to improve combustion efficiency. A predictive diagnostic tool has been developed and validated with the aim to monitor the wear evolution of the grinding system and to detect eventual anomalies in the mill operation. Finally, the system has been equipped with an advanced instrumentation for precise and reliable measurement of primary air flow aimed at reducing operability issues related to mill engulfment and poor coal fineness. The above described functionalities have been integrated in a single tool able to effectively support power plant operators. This paper describes the main technical features of the diagnostic system and the first results of the tuning and validation activities carried out on a prototype recently installed in a 660 MWe coal fired unit of Enel fleet.
